Rename Kurukshetra varsity after Bhagavad Gita: Haryana education

Kurukshetra University should be renamed after Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, Haryana Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma today said at an event here. Sharma, who attended an international seminar on 'Bhagavad Gita ki Sarvbhom Prasangata' at the varsity here along with Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki and several BJP and RSS leaders, rushed towards the mike before the governor was to deliver his speech. While the Governor kept on waiting for over a minute, Sharma said, "hum sab yahan maujood logon ka vichar hai ki university ka naam badal kar Bhagavad Gita par rakh dia jaye" (we all are of the view that the University should be renamed after Bhagavad Gita)." Though the Governor made no mention of the suggestion by Sharma in his speech, he later told mediapersons "the Minister has made a proposal...We will consider it." After the event ended, the Minister was confronted by some senior university teachers including President Kurukshetra University Teacher's Association (KUTA) Pramesh Kumar and prominent citizens including eminent social activist Vijay Sabharwal. Kumar said he told the Minister "Kurukshetra itself is a name to be revered as first 'shaloka' (hymn) of Bhagavad Gita starts with 'Dharma-kshetra Kurukshetra' (place of dharma, Kurukshetra), and the 58-year old university is famous the world over by the name." He said, "If at all the name has to be changed, the varsity should be named as 'Central University' as being demanded by KUTA." Asked about the proposal, Sharma told reporters, "It is the proposal of the 'Sant Samaj' (religious leaders who attended the seminar) which he forwarded to the Governor." Social acivist Sabharwal said the Kurukshetra University, the oldest in Haryana, was renamed by then chief minister Bansi Lal during Emergency in 1977 after former Haryana Governor B N Chakravarty. "However, the orginal name was restored after a year when senior Professor of History at the University V N Duta met the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and brought to her notice the resentment among people over the renaming of the University," he said. Besides, the Governor and the Education Minister others in attendance at the event were BJP general secretary Anil Jain, RSS leaders Suresh Joshi, Indresh Kumar, BJP MLAs respectively from Thanesar and Ladwa -- Subhash Sudha and Pawan Saini, Swami Gyana Nand -- president, Shrikrishana Kripa Samiti, Swami Som Giri among others. Panwar said, "In the era of globalisation, we would have to adopt 'Karma Sanskriti' to compete with the developed countries. We can develop our society and nation only by adopting 'Karma Sanskriti'. Even in the Gita, emphasis has been laid on performing selfless deeds." Apart from this, for the first time in the state, Gita Jayanti Samaroh would also start in every district of Haryana from tomorrow, he said.
